What is Kindness in Moby Dick: Ahab about?

Captain Ahab rescues Pip from being abandoned at sea after he is too afraid to jump off the boat to help catch whales. Ahab takes Pip onto his ship, cares for him like a son, and protects him from further harm. Even though Ahab is normally selfish and quick-tempered, he displays compassion for Pip. This act of kindness from Ahab shows that everyone has a capacity for kindness, even those with large egos, and that we should adopt kind attitudes towards others.
