What is Satire and Romanticism about?
his book emerged from the midst of a number of other projects and duties, so my debts to colleagues and supporters are widely distributed and ultimately innumerable. But one story must be told. I gave a talk at the Wordsworth Summer Conference in Grasmere, the English Lake District, in 1997 and received very helpful responses afterwards from Graeme Stones, Charles Donelan, Sally Bushell, Jonathan Wordsworth, Marilyn Gaull, and Karl Kroeber. That interchange shaped chapter 1 below, and in many ways, the book as a whole. In due time Marilyn Gaull became the most generous and encouraging of editors for this project, and to her I am especially grateful. Karl Kroeber's advice, in that setting (among the landscapes he first taught me to imagine through the language of Romantic poetry), was even more compelling than usual. On another day I heard Kroeber's typically direct (and sometimes cheerfully satiric) responses to a panel on The Rime of the Ancient Mariner just after seeing Hunt Emerson's raucous illustrations on display down the road, and the juxtaposition led me to write what became chapter 2.
