The poem describes the destruction of a forest by bulldozers. In the first stanza, rooks are building nests in oak trees and a toad waits to eat green flies by the pond. In the second stanza, squirrels flee up trees but branches have been knocked down. In the third stanza, a fox thinks he is safe in his den but is dug out by a bulldozer.
