This is a collection of ten papers, one linguistic and the rest ethnographic, on the Carib tribes of South America. The first three are general, relating to the Carib family as a whole. Ellen Basso, 'Introduction: The Status of Carib Ethnography', sets the scene with summaries of extant Carib tribes, relevant ethnographical studies, and cultural traits that are characteristically Carib. Marshall Durbin, Ά Survey of the Carib Language Family', provides an internal classification of Carib languages based on comparative phonological studies. Peter Riviere, 'Some Problems in the Comparative Study of Carib Societies', discusses certain principles relating to kinship systems and marriage rules that appear to be common to all Carib societies.
