Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in the 1950s as a response to the anti-communist hysteria happening in the United States at the time led by Senator Joseph McCarthy. Miller was motivated to write the play because he felt there was no clear moral standard during that period as liberals were afraid to speak out against violations of civil liberties by congressional committees investigating communist activities. Miller found parallels between the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s and the communist "witch hunts"
