In this article I would like to discuss some papyri that have a bearing on the early history of Christianity in Egypt I limit myself to papyri on which I have something new to say. Among the topics addressed are the earliest bilingual archives and the early development of monasticism. 2 ) The title of this article is taken from a collection of essays published a couple of years ago. 3 ) Creek documentary papyri dating from the late antique period enable us to study the society in which early Egyptian Christianity developed until the Arab conquest The amount of detail offered by these papyri is not available for other contemporary societies in the Roman empire. The virtual absence of this unique source of information from a recent survey of the early history of Christianity in Egypt 4 ) is startling and calls for a reappraisal of the wider cultural context We should not limit the early history of Christianity in Egypt to the development of theological thought, but even if we do, the wider cultural context is certainly relevant to the study of developments in theology as well.
