What is Paint: Overview about?
Paints and coatings are often encountered as forms of physical evidence. To understand their significance as evidence it is important to have a knowledge of their chemical nature, methods of application and function. Paint is a pigmented coating that imparts decoration and/or protection to the surface to which it is applied. Paint used for decoration can change the visual appearance (color, luster, and texture) of the item that is painted. Coatings used for protection are so ubiquitous that one hardly notices them, however their utility lies in extending an item’s lifespan. Boats and bridges, for example, are exposed to challenging water and weather environments, with paint often serving both as decoration and protection from the elements. In general, paint as a coating is not used solely for decoration or protections, but a combination of the two. Paint is a complex mixture composed of resin, pigments, additives and a solvent, each of which may be composed of a variety of different chemicals. This polymorphism of paint properties, both physical and chemical, is what provides for the evidentiary significance of paint traces.
