During the Roman Empire, Egypt was a wealthy province known for its grain production and urban economy, governed as Aegyptus from 27 BC to AD 642. The region experienced significant social and economic changes, including the introduction of Roman citizenship for free Egyptians in AD 212 and the rise of Christianity. Egypt was eventually conquered by the Sasanian Empire in 618, returned to the Eastern Roman Empire in 628, and permanently lost to the Rashidun Caliphate in 642.
