What is Transport Properties of Porous Lime and Their Influence on the Decomposition of Porous Compacts of Calcium Carbonate about?
Special experimental techniques have been developed to measure the thermal conductivity of porous lime and the diffusion coefficient of carbon dioxide through it. Measurements have been made on lime whose porosity varied in the range 0.45 < c < 0.8, and the results have shown that the diffusion process is Knudsen diffusion, a conclusion which is compatable with previous measurements of the specific surface of porous lime. The results have been used to confirm that the decomposition of calcium carbonate is controlled by heat and mass transfer. The decomposition rate can be predicted accurately using a heat and mass transfer model which assumes the reaction to occur on a receding interface and that chemical processes on this interface play no part in controlling the rate. These predictions are accurate even when the porosity of the original carbonate is as high as 066.
