Suitability of the biomass crop Miscanthus sinensis as a host for the aphids Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) and Rhopalosiphum maidis (F.), and its susceptibility to the plant luteovirus Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus by D. A. J. Huggett; S. R. Leather; K. F. A. Walters is a Agricultural and Biological Sciences article available to read on EtoBox.

What is Suitability of the biomass crop Miscanthus sinensis as a host for the aphids Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) and Rhopalosiphum maidis (F.), and its susceptibility to the plant luteovirus Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus about?

## Summary 1 The reproductive performance of two aphid pest species, __Rhopalosiphum padi__ and __Rhopalosiphum maidis__, was investigated on two seedling growth stages of __Miscanthus sinensis__, rhizomatous __M. sinensis__‘Giganteus’ and barley. __Rhopalosiphum padi__ was unable to complete its development on __Miscanthus__. __Rhopalosiphum maidis__ was most fecund on rhizomatous plants compared with seedling stages. 2 The ability of __R. maidis__ to transmit the RPV isolate of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) to __M. sinensis__ seedlings was further investigated. Following successful transmission, host plant symptomology and the effect of infection on the yield of __Miscanthus__ were investigated. Total above soil biomass was reduced by around 23% following infection. 3 The inability of __R. padi__ to utilize __Miscanthus__ is reviewed in light of this species’ origin and inability to utilize C~4~ host plants. 4 The potential pest status of __R. maidis__ on __Miscanthus__ is discussed together with the impact that __Miscanthus__ cultivation could have on the ecology of this aphid species and BYDV in the U.K.
