What is Springfield about?

Lincoln moved to Springfield, Illinois in 1837 which was a small, dirty, and muddy town. The streets were unpaved and filled with mud, manure, trash and roaming livestock. Buildings including homes, businesses, the state capitol, and hotels were mostly small, poorly constructed structures. The town lacked civic pride and proper sanitation, contributing to unpleasant odors. Visitors described Springfield in negative terms as unattractive and sickly due to its physical conditions and lack of development.
