Fungi are found in nearly every habitat on earth, from very hot to very cold environments, as well as in lakes with high salt concentrations. A unicellular microorganism was recovered from a hot spring in Wyoming at 95°C. Analysis revealed that it lacks a nucleus, has a cell wall lacking peptidoglycan, and has 70S ribosomes. The lipids in its plasma membrane contain long-chained branched hydrocarbons with ether linkages. This organism would be classified in the domain Archaea.
