What is TEENS, TOTS & CONDOMS: HIV PREVENTION AND CULTURAL IDENTITY AMONG YOUNG ADOLESCENT MOTHERS about?
Objective: This paper analyzes quantitative and qualitative data on the HIV-related risk attitudes and behaviors of young, inner-city adolescent mothers and presents recommendations for tailoring HIV prevention strategies for this group. Methods: A baseline survey on HIV-related knowledge, attitudes and behavior (N=58), focus groups and ethnographic interviews (N=59), and pilot intervention sessions (N=27) were conducted at the Rhode Island Hospital Teen Tot Clinic to determine the facilitators and barriers to condom use for young urban mothers. Results: Mothers at pre-test (N=58) have basic knowledge and some personal concern about HIV, but also hold common misconceptions about HIV and people with AIDS. Despite their anxiety about HIV, 28% reported having multiple partners, less than 38% consistently protected themselves against HIV by using condoms, and almost half rarely or never used a condom. Although 70% of the sample used hormonal contraceptives, 14% had a sexually transmitted disease (STD) and more than 40% of the sample had a second pregnancy (30% gave birth) within 18 months of the birth of their first baby. Focus groups, in-depth interviews and pilot intervention session
