Cyriacus of Ancona was the first cultural tourist since antiquity, traveling around the Mediterranean in the 15th century to document ancient Greek and Roman sites. He became fascinated with antiquities while viewing a Roman arch in his hometown of Ancona. Despite lacking knowledge of ancient languages and history, he taught himself Latin and Greek in order to investigate and understand ancient cultures through their architecture, sculptures, and inscriptions.
