<p>Everyone is worn down by the war which has been raging now for five long years, but five-year-old evacuee Johnnie Richards is so severely traumatised that Sheila Calvert journeys south from her family's Yorkshire farm where Johnnie is staying, to return him to his mother.</p> <p>Searching the airfields of Kent for Jane Richards, Sheila is shocked by the open hostility meted out by some of the USAAF personnel. However, she finds an ally in USAAF Lieutenant Todd Albany, and Johnnie is reunited with his mother.</p> <p>But returning Johnnie to his mother does not provide the solution to his troubles, and Sheila returns to Yorkshire to discover she has a personal disaster of her own to face. Throughout her ensuing struggles, Todd remains there for Sheila and Johnnie — until one day he and his plane are announced "missing".</p> <p>Sheila cannot believe that Todd has survived, but dare she hope that he could return?</p>
