The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has officially adopted the super typhoon category to classify tropical cyclones. PAGASA now classifies cyclones into four categories: tropical depression, tropical storm, typhoon, and super typhoon. A super typhoon has maximum sustained winds of more than 220 kph. This change emphasizes the strength and severity of impacts from strong tropical cyclones.
