What is Abstract Journal Surgical History about?

John Keats (1795-1821) trained as a surgeon at Guy's Hospital between 1814 and 1816 and was heavily influenced by Astley Cooper (1768-1841). In 1816 Keats was appointed a surgical Dresser to William Lucas Jr, a post in which he remained until March 1817. Keats passed the Apothecaries examination on 25th July 1816. However he never practiced surgery. Charles Armitage Brown (1787-1842) Keats friend reported that Keats last operation was the opening of a man's temporal artery and that after that he never took up the lancet again. The question arises why was Keats opening the temporal artery? He could have been bleeding a patient from the temporal artery or the artery could have been incised as part of the process of managing an unconscious patient with a depressed skull fracture. Trephining in the unconscious patient was widely practised at that time although Astley Cooper strongly opposed it, recommending bleeding of the patient first. In 1820 Keats became unwell and accompanied by the artist John Severn (1793-1879), travelled to Rome. On 23rd February 1821 John Keats died and was buried in the Protestant cemetery Rome.
