What is Extracurricular Activities in the School or Community Setting about?

With rising public health concerns around media consumption, inactivity, and obesity-related health problems in children and adolescents, discussions about extracurricular activities (ECAs) have never been more important. Most middle and high school-age youth are involved in at least one ECA and devote hours to these activities each week. Given this large investment of time in ECAs, an important question is whether, and how, ECA participation may positively influence youth development and serve as a protective factor against negative outcomes. This article discusses the various forms and settings of ECAs, best practices for measuring ECAs and related outcomes, outcomes associated with youth participation in ECAs including threshold effects, factors that influence the relationship between ECA involvement and developmental outcomes, and policy implications. The majority of published research suggests that involvement in ECAs is associated with favorable developmental outcomes in academic achievement, social development, psychological well-being, and risk behaviors (e.g., delinquency and substance use).
