What is The Foot as a Functional Unit of Gait about?

Whereas most of the lower limb can be divided by large joints lying between rigid long bones, the foot presents a particularly interesting biotensegrity structure. It is constructed from 28 bones, of which nineteen are long bones, seven are short bones, and two are the constant sesamoid bones situated under the 1st metatarsal head. However, not all sesamoid bones are constant, and it is common for there to be several more sesamoid variants and accessory ossicles within a foot (Nwawka et al., 2013). Furthermore, the intermediate and distal phalanges of the 5th toes are sometimes fused (Draves, 1986: p. 176). Between each foot bone lie joints, ligaments, fascial sheets, and muscles among which a large number of anatomical variations have been reported. The foot is therefore an area of intense and highly variable anatomy. The mechanical properties of the foot are controlled by alterations in the relationships between the anatomical structures. The foot's function and dysfunction has been mired in debate, not least because of its numerous variations but also because of its distinct anatomical vault profiles. Further debate exists as to whether certain foot bones that are tightly bound
