What is NGIMS/MAVEN observations of longitudinal structures in the Martian thermosphere about?
Longitudinal variations in the Martian thermosphere (100–200 km) are studied using Ar densities measured in situ by the Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer onboard the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN mission. In addition to wave 1, wave 2, and wave 3, we define ‘small-scale longitudinal structures (SSLS)’ that include contributions from wave 4 to wave 12. The results of the present study show that wave 1, wave 2, and wave 3 structures are persistent features of the Martian thermosphere with amplitudes reaching as high 40% of the background densities. The most probable amplitude, however, is between 1 and 10%. Amplitudes of wave 3 are smaller than those of wave 1 and wave 2. The amplitudes of the SSLS are larger than those of waves 1–3. wave 1, wave 2, and SSLS show diurnal variability with larger amplitudes during nighttime and smaller amplitudes during daytime. Such a day-night difference is not observed for wave 3. The response of these waves to solar activity, solar insolation and lower atmospheric dust are examined using an empirical relation. Among all the waves, wave 2 has maximum response to solar activity. In addition, wave 1 and SSLS show strong response to the l
