The parish of Mexico was founded in 1581 along the banks of Sapang Matulin in the Philippines. It was originally established with the visitas of San Jose Matulid and Masang sang. The first Augustinian missionaries to arrive were Fathers Quevado, Heredero, Montoya, Peralta, Montes de Oca, Zabala, Gutierrez, and Bendoya. The parish was later relocated to its current site in Parian due to flooding in San Jose Matulid. The first stone church was built in 1665 by Father Jose dela Cruz. This church was destroyed
