The Joint National Commnitee recommends screening mammography every 1-2 years for women ages 40-74. Women at high risk for breast cancer due to family history or genetic factors may need mammograms starting at an earlier age or more frequently. Mammography is not recommended for women under 40 due to the higher chance of false positives and unnecessary biopsies that do not significantly improve health outcomes at those younger ages.
