What is Finite Element Method in Fracture Mechanics about?
The finite element method has been widely used to model crack problems in fracture mechanics. Early applications in the 1960s used standard elements which did not accurately capture stress singularities near crack tips. In the 1970s, quarter-point elements were developed that improved accuracy by incorporating the correct 1/√r stress variation. Later, enriched elements added analytic crack tip functions to the approximation. More recently, extended finite element methods allow modeling of crack propagation
