Charles Chaplin was born in London in 1889 into extreme poverty and his mother suffered from mental illness. He and his brother Sydney joined the Fred Karno comedy troupe, which helped develop their skills in comedy. In the 1910s, Chaplin began his film career in the US, directing himself and creating his iconic Tramp character. He founded United Artists studio with others and directed several classics that cemented his status as a comedy genius, including The Gold Rush, City Lights, and Modern Times. Later
