What is Humin from Hydroxymethylfurfuraldehyde about?
## Abstract Pure hydroxymethylfurfuraldehyde when heated in aqueous solution under pressure to 130° in presence of a small amount of oxalic or hydrochloric acid affords a black, carbonaceous humin, which agrees completely in characteristics and in composition with the humin produced as a by‐product in the preparation of laevulic acid by boiling hexoses with dilute sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, thus proving that hydroxymethylfurfuraldehyde is an intermediate product in the formation of humin from hexoses.
