Ribeiroia ondatrae, a parasite found in lakes and ponds, contributes to frog limb deformities. An experiment conducted in 1999 found that adding phosphorus to mimic fertilizer pollution led to an increase in algae and water snails. This in turn increased the population of R. ondatrae parasites, as the parasites rely on the snails for part of their lifecycle. The parasites then infected frog tadpoles, causing cysts to form and result in missing, extra or malformed limbs as the frogs developed.
