Nick Joaquin, born in Paco, Manila, was a notable writer who gained recognition between 1934 and 1941 for his stories and poems. His first poem was published in 1937, and he premiered his first play in 1955. Joaquin was named National Artist of the Philippines in 1976 and continued to write until his death in April 2004 at the age of eighty-six.
