The Crusades were military and religious expeditions called by the Pope between the 11th and 13th centuries, primarily to recover the holy places in the Holy Land from Muslim hands. There were a total of eight Crusades, with the first one in 1095 being successful, but the majority of the subsequent ones failed to achieve their objectives. Although they did not permanently conquer the Holy Land, the Crusades had consequences such as the resurgence of trade in Europe.
