Viruses are microscopic infectious agents that consist of a nucleic acid core surrounded by a protein coat and can only replicate inside living cells. They differ from cells in that they have a single type of nucleic acid, lack metabolic enzymes, and do not possess the machinery for protein synthesis. Viruses reproduce rapidly within host cells, are acellular, and come in various shapes and sizes ranging from 20 to 400 nanometers.
