About this document

Understanding Network Address Translation by Anh Tran is a document available to read on EtoBox.

Network address translation (NAT) modifies IP address information in IP packet headers as they pass through a routing device. The simplest type of NAT provides a one-to-one translation of IP addresses between private and public networks. More commonly, NAT translates an entire private IP address space to a single public IP address, altering higher-level port information to avoid ambiguity in return packets. This enables multiple private hosts to access the internet through a single public IP address.
