What is The Exeter Blitz about?

No one knew why Exeter should have been chosen as a target for the disastrous bombing raids that hit the city, though some suspected it was in retaliation for the destruction of certain German cathedral towns. For Colin Lockwood, standing on the cathedral tower as the bombs rained down, the blitz meant excitement and awe — until he realised the perilous position of members of his family. His mother had been at a fashion show — what of her? And what had become of his father and younger sister who had stayed at home? Or of his elder sister out at the cinema with her boyfriend? As the long, terrifying night ended Colin discovered what had become of each one, made a friend out of an enemy, and learned a great deal about himself. David Rees’s wartime novel explores with sensitivity these inter-family relationships, set against the grim reality of a provincial blitz.
