About this document
Piezo1: Mechanosensor in Epithelial Health by Ella is a document available to read on EtoBox.
Piezo1 is a membrane protein that acts as a mechanosensor in epithelial cells, converting mechanical pressure into electrochemical signals. When activated, three Piezo1 proteins come together to form an ion channel, allowing calcium to enter the cell. Piezo1 regulates pressure in epithelia by inducing cell proliferation when stretched and cytoskeletal contractions that eject excess cells when crowded. Piezo1 may be involved in several medical conditions as the predominant mechanically activated ion channel
