Professor Rollin considers that human medical ethics. which has a vast literature, is philosophically not all that interesting, whereas issues concerning our moral obligations toward laboratory animals (or, indeed. toward any animals) are fascinating, because the field is almost totally unexplored. The foundation of the ideal which he is trying to develop is the acceptance that animals, like people. have intrinsic, not merely instrumental, value -that they are ends in themselves and not merely means to human ends. This argument is based on the absence of morally relevant differences between people and animals. and on the presence of morally relevant similarities.
