This study aimed to evaluate which computed tomography (CT) features best predict patient survival after head injury. The researchers reviewed CT scans from 425 patients blinded to clinical information and recorded features such as hemorrhages, swelling, and focal or diffuse damage. They found age, Glasgow Coma Scale, pupil reaction, subarachnoid blood, and a simple grading of overall scan appearance were independently predictive of 1-year survival.
