This document discusses the production of 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) from biomass-derived carbohydrates using sulfated complex metal oxides as solid acid catalysts. A series of these catalysts were synthesized and tested for converting mono-, di- and poly-saccharides as well as starchy food waste into EMF. The best performing catalyst was found to be Zr-Sn-Fe-Al-O-S, which achieved a 33.1% yield of EMF from glucose.
