What is The Fall of Acre: End of the Crusades about?
The fall of Acre in 1291 marked the end of the Crusades and Christian control in the Holy Land. Despite appeals from Pope Nicholas IV, Christian kings and leaders showed little enthusiasm for another crusade. When Nicholas IV died in 1292, the College of Cardinals became deadlocked in their conclave to elect a new pope, divided between the powerful Orsini and Colonna families in Rome. After over a year, the cardinals were unable to agree on a new pope as political infighting prevented the necessary votes.
