This study examined the direct and indirect costs of diabetes care among 250 diabetic patients in India. It found that the average direct cost per visit was 553 INR, with medicines accounting for the largest share. The total average cost of diabetes care per visit, including indirect costs, was 912 INR. Higher costs were associated with longer duration of illness and presence of complications. Most patients could not independently afford treatment costs and relied on family for financial support.
