What is Menopause about?

Menopause is a time of transition that is marked for many women by fluctuating physiologic changes that impact quality of life in the short term with vasomotor symptoms, sleep and mood disturbances as well as long-term changes such as genitourinary symptoms and decreased bone density. Natural menopause is defined as the absence of menses for 12 months without a pathologic cause. The average age of menopause is 51.4 years but can vary based on socioeconomic status and current tobacco use. 1 The diagnosis of perimenopause and menopause may be made without laboratory testing. Women more than 45 years old who are experiencing vasomotor symptoms with irregular menses are assumed to be in perimenopause, and those who have not had menses for more than 12 months are menopausal. No blood work is needed. For women without a uterus, menopause should be based on symptoms alone. 2 For women less than 45 years old who are experiencing menstrual cycle
