What is Biofilm Formation by Candida albicans about?
Candida albicans forms biofilms on the vaginal mucosa in vivo and ex vivo. Using murine models of vaginitis, the study found that C. albicans strains 3153A and DAY815 formed biofilms on the vaginal mucosa as demonstrated by high fungal burden and microscopy showing typical biofilm architecture and extracellular matrix co-localized with fungi. In contrast, efg1/efg1 and bcr1/bcr1 mutant strains, which are defective in biofilm formation in vitro, exhibited weak or no biofilm formation on vaginal epithelium de
