What is Zirconium Materials and Their Application about?
Minerals can charm us as beautiful gemstones and serve as valuable materials. Their hardness, optical properties, chemical and thermal resistance, and other special characteristics are irreplaceable for certain applications. All this fascinates me about these materials, which can be of natural origin or artificially produced. The idea of the book started with my interest in a diamond-like gemstone called "zircon." As a mineral it belongs to the group of silicates and is of great importance for geochronometry because of its possible great age. Its competitor as a gemstone bears the name "zirconia." It does not occur in nature in this form, and from a material-technical point of view, it belongs to the group of oxides. The metal "zirconium" plays an important role in nuclear technology and its oxide forms an important group of ceramic materials. The names mentioned are amazingly similar and confusion is almost inevitable, which in turn often leads to erroneous information. I found this exciting, but also irritating. So I decided to write about it, to contribute something to the distinction of these materials. Naming is often an adventure. With minerals, it is usually colors to which
