The international congress on East-West Relations: Prospects for the 1980s, organised by the Institute of European Studies 'Aicide De Gasperi' in Rome in the spring of 1980, was held at a time when the dramatic impact of the Afghan events and the ensuing US grain embargo and other counter-measures seemed to call for careful reconsideration of the benefits and disadvantages of closer interdependence between East and West. On the strictly economic plane, the slow recovery of Western economies from a sharp recession and the gradual slackening of Eastern growth rates seemed to lead to a revival of dangerous protectionist attitudes. Many of the papers presented at the congress, analysing the basic political and economic issues of East-West relations and the prospects for trade and co-operation, are now collected in this volume.
