Devr-i Revan and the First Selam A s the longest individual section of the ayin, the First Selam offers an extended demonstration of the techniques and the vision of the ayin's composer. It also signals the start of the 'whirling' of the semazens. The three 'ancient compositions' for the mukabele, as well as Mustafa Dede's Beyati Ayini, all commence with the First Selam in usul devr-i revan. This practice was evidently a tradition that, with very few exceptions (noted in chapter 3), was maintained by later Mevlevi composers. The prominence of devr-i revan in the Mevlevi compositional tradition merits further exploration of this usul's history and evolving cultural context.In the seventeenth century, Ali Ufuki/Bobowski had devised a relatively clear method for specifying the numerical structure of individual usuls, as had his fellow foreign-born Ottoman musician Cantemir in the early eighteenth century.
