What is Crack Growth on Increase of Load about?
A satisfactory basis for a theory of crack growth on loading has recently been presented by McCartney [l]. Whether crack growth occurs depends on microstructural processes. When the crack grows it is assumed that the energy required to form a unit area of new crack surface is independent of crack size. McCartney proposes that for a crack of length 2c in an infinite plate under an applied normal stress a, the rate of energy dissipation D in a non work-hardening elastic material may be written as ac + B~ where a and ~ are functions of c and ~. He then advances a theory based on the assumption that plasticity is confined to the plane of the crack. If the cohesive zone is ignored, and D equals the integral over the plastic zones of the yield stress times the rate of relative normal displacement, he notes that there is then no energy available for crack growth. If a fixed length of cohesive zone is assumed and D equals the sum of a term proportional to crack growth rate and the integral over the remainder of the plastic zone of the same integrand as before, he shows how a theory of slow crack growth may be developed. He also notes that if D is taken to be the rate of change of the integ
