was impressed by Schliemann's rhetoric of discovery. Although Evans was far down the line of explorers hoping to excavate Knossos, most of whom had given credit to Kalokairinos as the discoverer and first excavator who believed that he had discovered the Palace of Minos and its labyrinth (123), he himself refused to share with Kalokairinos the place in history that he deserved, and hardly ever referred to him by name in any of his many accounts of discovery (cf. Palace of Minos IV, p. 621 n. 1). Like Schliemann, he sought the sole glory. And Evans enjoyed supreme authority at Knossos for, unlike Schliemann, who never owned the land on which he excavated, Evans successfully purchased most of the site years before he began to excavate and soon owned it all. Thus, he silenced those who might claim a prior stake in the site and all those followers who disagreed with his interpretations. Although both Calvert and Kalokairinos each eventually protested, it was too late to stem the tide of public opinion and neither was remembered.
