What is Ocean Applications about?

One important reality of ocean remote sensing is that it is basically restricted to the surface or at most very near surface of the ocean. While satellites are critical components of open ocean autonomous ocean profiling systems, satellite-borne sensors cannot penetrate very far into the ocean itself. Satellite altimeters measure the ocean's surface and its variations and therefore reflect a vertical integral, but still the altimetric signal does not penetrate into the interior of the ocean. Ocean color may penetrate a few tens of meters into the upper layer of the ocean, but that is about the deepest any spaceborne sensor penetrates into the ocean. That said there is plenty of information available from satellite sensors that is relevant to processes that link the ocean and atmosphere and contribute to the Earth's climate system. The sea surface temperature (SST) of the ocean is one of the oldest ocean measurements that has been collected, but the shift to satellite SST has changed the way we sense SST and thus its relationship to the climate puzzle.
