What is Hall-Heroult Process Overview about?
The Hall-Heroult process uses electrolysis to produce molten aluminum from alumina. Alumina is dissolved in a cryolite electrolyte bath and direct current is passed between carbon anodes and a carbon-lined cathode vessel. This drives the chemical reaction that reduces alumina to aluminum metal at the cathode. The process occurs at 950°C and produces molten aluminum and carbon dioxide gas, but has low electrical efficiency around 50%.
