Screen (1971±) During the 1960s a strange outbreak of Francophilia associated with the journal, New Left Review, took off from Louis Althusser's marxist ideas. Although the immediate consequences were mainly political, the long-term effect, one still working its way through English culture, was to inject an almost unprecedented form of rationalism into the pervasively empiricist tradition.
