According to early concepts, acids were substances that produced hydrogen ions in water and bases produced hydroxyl ions. However, Bronsted and Lowry proposed in 1923 that acids should be defined as proton donors and bases as proton acceptors. Their concept established that every acid has a conjugate base that is its proton acceptor pair, and every base has a conjugate acid that is its proton donor pair. Common examples of conjugate acid-base pairs include acids donating protons to their conjugate bases.
