What is Vitruvius: Firmness, Commodity, Delight about?

The earliest surviving written work on architecture is De Architectura by Vitruvius, which defined three principles of a good building: firmitas (durability), utilitas (utility), and venustas (beauty). Later works such as by Alberti and Vasari further developed these ideas. Ruskin believed architecture was the art of building decoration. Modern thinkers such as Sullivan believed form should follow function. Contemporary architecture now also considers sustainability in construction.
