Nanook of the North (1922) was the first documentary film by American filmmaker Robert Flaherty. It followed the life of an Inuit hunter named Nanook and his family as they struggled to survive in the harsh Arctic environment. Though Flaherty staged some scenes for dramatic effect, the film provided a humanizing look at Inuit life not seen before. It was a commercial success and has been preserved in the National Film Registry as a culturally significant work.
